I, Background
As the world's
largest river alluvial island group, Chongming Island boasts a unique wetland
landscape, rich biological resources and sufficient solar and wind energy.
Chongming, Changxing and Hengsha islands comprise a total area of 1,411 square
kilometers, equivalent to one-sixth of the total area of Shanghai. However,
Chongming is also facing problems such as ecological degradation, industrial
backwardness and lacking of basic infrastructure. With the approval and support
of the State Council of China, Shanghai Municipal government will assemble both
government and social resources to promote the development and advancement of
Chongming.
So far, Shanghai
has started the major project of ¡°Chongming ecological-island development¡±,
which is also listed in the projects co-supported by Shanghai municipal
government and the Ministry of Science and Technology of China. At the same time, the Science
and Technology Commission of Shanghai Municipality and Chongming County
government have co-established six major labs and innovation centers including
everglade research and ecological engineering and launched ten priority
projects, which aim directly to address current bottleneck technological problems
in Chongming¡¯s development.
II, Aim
of the Forum
2006 Shanghai International Eco-Island Chongming
Forum, supported by Ministry of Science and Technology, sponsored by Science
and Technology Commission of Shanghai Municipality and Chongming county government,
organized by Shanghai Technology Convention and Exhibition Co., Ltd., will be
held on July 12 to 14 at Shanghai DongTan International Conference Center. Inspired
by the advanced technologies and experience on ecological island, Science and
Technology Commission of Shanghai Muncipality has established international
cooperation platforms to attract domestic and foreign expertise on Chongming¡¯s
development.
We believe that
the forum will provide the local government with valuable suggestions and comments
on the exploration of Chongming through in-depth discussions and analysis of
the current situation, resources and problems.
